... als Familienoberhaupt:Salt ist ein echter &quot;Familienwal&quot;: Im Laufe ihres Lebens ist sie bereits 16-mal Mutter geworden, mittlerweile 18-fache Großmutter und sogar 4-fache Urgroßmutter! Sie hat also eine ganze Familien- Dynastie gegründet und sorgt so für den Fortbestand ihrer Artgenossen im Golf von Maine. Sie alle schützen als Ökosystem-Ingenieure das Meer, mitsamt seiner Funktion als Klimapuffer. Das zeigt, welchen Unterschied es machen kann, ob ein Wal überlebt oder stirbt.Das Ergebnis: Mehr Wale, die das Meer und damit das Klima schützen.... beim Jagen:Salt hat mit ihren Artgenossen ausgeklügelte Jagdtechniken entwickelt, um an Fisch zu gelangen. Eine davon nennen wir &quot;Bubblenet-Feeding&quot; oder Blasennetz-Fang, was so viel wie Jagen mit einem Netz aus Luftblasen bedeutet. Beim Blasennetz-Fang schließen sich meist mehrere Wale zusammen und umkreisen einen Fischschwarm spiralförmig. Sie stoßen dabei unter Wasser Luftblasen aus, die sich wie ein Netz um die Fische schließen. Die Buckelwale schwimmen dann mit geöffnetem Maul direkt durch den eingeschlossenen Fischschwarm hindurch und vertilgen dabei mehrere Hundert Fische. An der Wasseroberfläche erkennt man diese Jagdmethode zunächst als einen großen Kreis aus Luftblasen. Wendet Salt diese Jagdtechnik an, verwirbelt sie so die Wasserschichten mit dem Ergebnis, dass sich Nährstoffe innerhalb der gesamten Wassersäule verteilen. Das Ergebnis: Die Nährstoffe im Meer werden gut verteilt und das Ökosystem so im Gleichgewicht gehalten.... auf dem &quot;stillen Örtchen&quot;:Salt ernährt sich von Krill und Fisch in den Tiefen der Ozeane. Für ihre Ausscheidungen kommt sie an die Meeresoberfläche. Dort leben mikroskopisch kleine Pflanzen, das sogenannte Phytoplankton. Salts Ausscheidungen sind ein wichtiger Dünger für das Phytoplankton, das wiederum Sonnenlicht mittels Photosynthese in Energie und Sauerstoff umwandelt. Forscher kamen zudem 2014 zu dem Schluss, dass die reichen Nähr- und Mineralstoffe im Walkot, wie z.B. Eisen, dabei helfen, die Fischbestände zu erhalten. Mit ihren Ausscheidungen fördern die Wale also gesunde Meere in ihren Nahrungsgebieten.Das Ergebnis: Mehr Wal-Ausscheidungen bedeuten mehr Phytoplankton und damit mehr Sauerstoff, den auch wir einatmen.... nach ihrem Tod:Salts bewegtes Leben dauert nun schon über 40 Jahre an – und damit ist sie &quot;erst&quot; in ihrer Lebensmitte angelangt. Buckelwale können bis zu 80 Jahre alt werden. Sofern sie nicht durch menschlichen Einfluss vorher sterben. Salt und ihre Familie müssen Jahr um Jahr Gefahren, wie Kollisionen mit Schiffen und dem Verfangen in Netzen, trotzen. Auch ihr Lebensraum verändert sich aufgrund des Klimawandels.Nach ihrem Tod wird Salt auf den Grund des Meeres sinken und dort den Kohlenstoff, der im Laufe ihres Lebens in ihrem Körper gespeichert wurde, für lange Zeit binden. Gleichzeitig wird sie neues Leben schaffen – als Oase für Kleinstlebewesen am Meeresboden, die wiederum als Nahrungsquelle für größere Tiere fungieren.
